I've added a blog to a members area on a website but the owners want to hide the blog from google as this blog is for members only, they have a separate blog for the public, after a bit of searching this looks like it cant be done, has anyone found a way round this ?

Adrian,
Did you ever figure this out? The solution for me is in the page settings SEO (Google). Towards the bottom you can toggle the option to show a page in search results. Give it time and you'll see it eventually removes the pages from your Sitemap.xml
I had this issue also as it kept having specific members Posts page showing in search results. The solution above worked for me.
Thanks Adrian for quick response. Actually it is not possible as for now but we're planning to allow it in the coming weeks (you'll be able to make the Blog for members only via pages panel).
Hi Adrian,
please let me know the URL of the site so I could advise. Currently the solution depends on some site specifics, but we are working to make it consistent for all.
