"Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."-Matthew 5:48
What is your idea of perfect? What comes to mind when the word perfect or perfectionism comes to mind? To me, I used to think of a ballerina: graceful, poised, elegant, a beautiful face whose body danced weightlessly in the wind. The story that they told through their body seemed effortless yet flawless.
But what happened behind those curtains: blood, sweat, tears, maybe an eating disorder, maybe even a lot more despair behind those beautiful faces.
Even in ballet, there are flaws, this isn't perfect. For some reason, God brought the word 'Perfectionsim' or 'Perfect' to mind. What do you believe perfectionism is? He asked. I answered, "To be complete or whole or to be set apart for a specific purpose (Link)." "What else?" My mind started to elaborate on this concept, I think the world has a misunderstanding of what perfect is. The dictionary definition of perfect is: "1. conforming absolutely to the description or definition of an ideal type: 2. excellent or complete beyond practical or theoretical improvement."
We are human and of course, we have flaws and are sinners, we are nothing close to the idea of perfect. But when looked through a different lens, God is always calling us to improve and to move up to a higher standard. There is no limit for us humans if we keep trying to live up to the higher standard that He's called us to. Even though we fall, stumble, and make a mess, He is still merciful to forgive and to encourage us to keep moving forward.
A Call to Holiness (Hebrews 12:14–17)
Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct yourselves in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot. He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake.
Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in God.
The Enduring Word (Isaiah 40:6–8)
Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth so that you have a genuine love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from a pure heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For,
“All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was proclaimed to you."-
1 Peter 13-25
If we stopped looking at each other's flaws and looked at ourselves in the mirror, you'll always see room for improvement. I'm not saying to get down on yourself and criticize every little thing, I'm just saying God wants us to keep growing and to never stop improving even the smallest details of our lives. God's word is filled with promises, reproofs, and lessons that we all need. Daily life may appear or seem mundane but even with going through the motions, you can find joy.
Being a single mother and juggling a crying baby, plus chores is a dance that always needs improvement and also gets easier over time. It's fun finding out ways to make daily tasks easier and of course, it's exceptionally nice to have extra hands to help. Just seeing her smile and hearing her laugh is the best, even within all the chaos, the little moments leading up to big moments in life can be something wonderful.
Trying to be "perfect" or striving for it shouldn't be a bad thing. I also kind of think that some people use this word as an excuse to not strive because they're either being lazy or they don't want others to strive ahead of them. God calls His people to be ready for heaven and there's no better training ground than here on earth.
Anyways, thank you for reading my rambling, I hope you found this thought at the very least interesting.
