Her Shadow, is a short story inspired by the prompt: "Write about someone hosting a cookie exchange as a cover to hide the true reason for inviting one of their guests," from Reedsy-Contest #71. I want to get more serious about my writing and enter as much contests that I can in order to get better.
This story is about a young woman named Katrina who stumbles upon a crime scene that's linked to the murder of Chef Amour, the owner of the bakery she works at:
"What do you mean the trail’s gone cold? Frank, we got a deadline to keep!” Gus exclaimed as he paced in his office, his brows almost touching as the creases on his forehead deepened with frustration. “And what about that girl? Aren’t you supposed to be protecting her. How are you going to do this job when she’s unknowingly involved?” Frank sunk deeper into thought while his body sunk deeper into the chair. “How are you going to pretend “Bakery Manager”?
Frank let out a sigh, “I’ll host a cookie exchange at the bakery to lure Chef Amour’s killer. The killer was not only obsessed with her, but also her top recipes and experiments.” Gus sat down at his desk, “Okay, I’m listening.” “If we get him into her restaurant and have our “employees” keeping an eye out for him, we can easily drag him to the back and take care of things.” “And what about that girl? It seemed like Amour’s killer got somehow interested in her too.” “Unfortunately, we can also use that to our advantage; he’s probably getting off his current high and finding a new high-something different. Michael Corp usually goes for women that have popularity and fame, but maybe he wants to try something different and go low key...well at least that’s what it seems.” “Keep a special eye on that girl Frank, we can’t afford to lose her. She’s the only one that reminds us that there’s still good in this world and that there may actually be a God.” “You know I always do, and besides she’s my girl,” Frank said half halfheartedly joking.
